Gorey Castle

Gorey Castle or Mont Orgueil is probably one of Jersey’s most famous landmarks and dates back to the 13th century.  At some point it was saved from demolition by Sir Walter Raleigh (he of potato fame) when he was a Governor of Jersey.    I remember school trips here - both mine and my childrenʻs, the sort that you get on a coach with a packed lunch and a pac-a-mac raincoat. And whilst I remember it, there always seemed to be a clipboard involved for working out a quiz or scribbling down facts. The only one of those facts I retained was that it's built in a concentric design, a bit like the swirl on a snail shell. I obviously had the finest education.  It's a little bit of a workout to reach the ramparts at the top but the view is literally breath-taking!
